Many people endlessly dream for a journalism career simply because of the seemingly infinite opportunities that would be waiting for them. This is also the reason why many people—even if they are not cut out for it—continue to pursue this career because they can’t seem to let the opportunities it could bring along the way.

If you are one of those who have innate gift and talent for a journalism career, then now is the time to consider pursuing it seriously. Not only because of the opportunities that could open up to you but also the chance to be doing something that you really enjoy.

The perks and the advantages

Who could blame people who are trying their best to launch a journalism career when a list of opportunities awaits them? Here are some of the perks and advantages of being a journalist:

1. The opportunity to influence other people’s way of thinking. The biggest privilege that journalists have is the opportunity to be a catalyst of social change. How? Since they are given the opportunity to get their thoughts printed, they have the chance to influence a lot of people who will be reading it. This may sound petty to some but real journalists consider this as a very big opportunity to change the society that is why they are doing everything to be responsible for their writing.

2. Getting a dose of fame. The pen—or computer keyboard these days—is indeed a mighty weapon to be successful. People who given the privilege to hold it and use it are considered lucky because they have the chance to gain popularity for writing stories that could create an impact to the society. Once this impact has been acknowledged by prominent people in government and in the society in general, he or she will get a dose of fame right away.

3. Experiencing things one has never experienced before. A career in journalism opens up a person to different worlds he or she has never experience before. These may include getting to the most beautiful places for free and meeting people from all walks of life. These may also include getting special treatments from people from different sectors of the society.

4. Experience freedom through writing. People in other fields are restricted to do the things other than their job requires. In journalism, while there are minor restrictions, this doesn’t affect the fact that they have better chances of relishing their freedom since they can always write about things without the fear of being questioned in doing so.

Preparing for journalism career

If you are looking forward to a career in journalism, the best thing that you can do is to prepare yourself as early as possible. If you want to be a journalist, you should start working on your writing skills by practicing it very often. You should also immerse yourself with lots of reading materials such as books so you will be introduced to various writing styles.

If you get to college and you are still looking forward to a career in journalism, then you should consider finding a good school and take up a journalism degree. Here, you can have formal training while earning all the credentials you will be needing once you apply for a position in a certain publication.

Veterans in the media industry would agree that a journalism career is not for everybody. This is because aside from having superior writing skills, having a journalism career entails so much more.

If you are one of those who are applying to be a journalist or its equivalent in a certain publication, it is a must that you take note of these qualities that most employers—especially the editors—look for their employees:

1. Being a “people person”. Working for a newspaper or any publication would require you to possess qualities that other people will appreciate such as being nice, sincerity, loyalty, and being considerate. Many editors agree that a journalist cannot come up with a good story without the help of other people—especially their sources—who they consider as their reference persons. If you want a journalism career, you should be able to work with all kinds of people from all walks of life.

2. Has a pleasing and decent personality. Journalists are the ones that are usually stay on the field when they gather news stories and come up with articles. When they are outside the office, the represent their company in whatever event there is. Since the journalist serves as the “face” of the company as well as of his or her editors, it is must that he or she should be able to represent the company well by knowing how to act and react to situations. If you are looking forward to a journalism career, you should start building your reputation as early as now. You must know how to act appropriately since you will reflect the company, what it stands for and its people as well.

3. A balanced personality and strong character. This is very important for people who are aiming at journalism careers to have a strong character because the very nature of the job calls for it. Since you will be dealing with all kinds of people and personalities, it is a must that the journalist has a balanced personality so he or she could adjust very well to any situation. And, he or she should be strong enough to separate the job from his or personal objections or opinions because this will really help the story to come out better and unbiased.

4. Should be able to tolerate stress well. People who are looking forward to a journalism career should prepare for the biggest test on the field—dealing with pressure. Journalism is all about deadlines. And when you say deadline, it is always synonymous to stress. Why? because everything in this field is all about competition. Your editor will get mad at you if you don’t get the biggest scoop in town. For you to do the story well and meet the deadline for editing and publication, it is a must that you know how to handle and deal with pressure well so this will not affect your work output.

5. Knows how to value ethics in the field. The journalism industry is a hard one penetrate because it’s all about time and all about competition. It might seem that people in this field are vulnerable and easy to be corrupted. If you are one of those who are looking forward to a journalism career, it is a must that as early as now, you should be able to memorize in your heart the ethics of the field so you won’t be sidetracked once other factors come along the way.

Journalism, like any other career, needs a lot of work especially if you want to climb to the top of the industry. Although it seems like such an easy job, it is not when you really look at what they are doing. You’ll say, careers in journalism often involves writing and speaking in front of the camera. Anyone can do that, even a high school student. But when you study them closely, you will see that the profession is not really in the task per se as much as it is in the quality of the work.

You have to remember that journalists are considered to be the opinion-makers of the world. They tell you what is in and what is out. They give you advice on what to do and how to do things, where to go and where not to. What they say matters and when it comes to this, newspapers and news channels must make sure that the people that they hire do not only have the skill for the job but also the right attitude and the right set of morals.

So if you are thinking of going into the field of journalism, here are some of the things that you need to have in order to make a career out of it. Read on and see if you have what it takes to go head to head with others who also want to get into the field.

1. Writing skill
Even those who are speaking in front of the camera in broadcast journalism have had background in writing. In fact, some of them even write an outline of their report before they face the camera. It is essential that you manage to first look at the news story and be able to angle it in such a way that you will be able to deliver it in an interesting and yet structured manner.

2. Grammar
Whether you are in print or in broadcast, you need to have a good grasp of grammar. This is especially true with broadcast journalists who are basically reporting as things happen. With print journalists, they can still edit their work and check their grammar. This is however not true with broadcasters who say the words. Once they have committed the grammar mistake, they will not have the chance to undo them.

3. Presence
Presence is different with print and with broadcast. Presence in broadcast has a lot to do with general attractiveness and face value in front of the camera. There are also people who are much charming or charismatic than others regardless of their physical appearance. On the other hand, presence in print has to do with the style in writing. Writers need to have a certain voice that will differentiate their writing from other people. Writers with presence in their writing will be able to gain a lot more following than other people in the same industry.

4. Training and education
This is pretty important because the industry is a constantly changing world. If you want to be on top of the game, you need to constantly be in the know when it comes to the new things in the world. People with a journalism career after all need to be constantly updated with the new things.

Looking at how cool their job is hosting on television and delivering the daily news each morning, a lot of people right now dream of becoming broadcast journalists. And who would not want to have a career in journalism? They basically have the coolest job in the planet. They are given access to the most exclusive of parties in the metro.

They talk with celebrities like they are long lost friends. They get to be on TV and get the perks of traveling and partying. They even sometimes get freebies and gifts from the events that attend. And all these they do while getting paid for doing their job!

But as glamorous as a journalism career is, it’s not all sweetness and light. In fact, when you really think about it, it can be such a bummer to go to parties and not be able to do just that, party. After all, you need to work. And I tell you, it’s not east work. Before a journalist can come up with an article or a report for broadcast, they must first interview a lot of people, they have to verify their sources and gather facts.

After that, they need to weave all those information into one beautiful and interesting article that is not boring despite all the facts that are in it. The article should not be something that one can read from the encyclopedia or from an advertorial. It must be written in such a way that is refreshing and inviting to the readers.

To do that, you need to be an exceptionally great writer. Notice that I did not use the word good, I used great. A great writing skill is needed to at least get your message across in the most creative and fun way. It can be crazy but still be comprehensible. In fact, what people call crazy may be something that is interesting to read and therefore will get more attention.

Of course, beyond the style, you also need to be able to write it well meaning with straight English and no grammatical error. That means that you also need to be well verse in the rules of English grammar. Aside from this, you also need to be able to write the article in such a way that is logical, coherent and factual. You cannot just write anything without basis. If you want to build a credible name in the industry, you need to ensure that you write only the truth and the verified.

Another important reminder in getting a career in journalism is to always be updated with the new and the fresh. You need to ensure that you are in close tabs with what is happening with the rest of the world. After all, journalists are expected to always be the first to know about the latest. How can they report it when they are the last to know?

But the latest information is not the only thing that you should be updated with. You also need to update yourself with the latest in the field. For instance, right now, online journalism is pretty big in the country. As a journalist, you also might want to update your skills in these areas so that when a big shift comes, you are well prepared for it.

Many people would want to have a journalism career because of the freedom and perks it gives to the person. Although it may seem easy to have one, it’s not always the case especially now that more and more people would want to become a part of the journalism industry.

If you are one of those who are eyeing for a journalism career, the best thing that you can do is earn the skills and the credentials needed for it. Writing skills and the “nose” for news should be honed as early as possible. This can be done by getting one’s self to read as many materials such as books, magazines, etc. as possible. By reading all these stuff, it will be easier for you to find your style in writing since you will be influenced by many writers. It will also help you widen your vocabulary that is essential for writing.

The next best thing that you can do is to earn credentials especially when you get to college. You can do this by taking up a journalism course or another course that can lead you to the profession. If you were able to finish a journalism course in college, it will be easier for you to apply for a journalism career when you finish since you already have the basic credentials to back you up.

While in college, you may also earn other forms of credentials aside from the academics by joining the school or community paper. When you do this, it will serve as your training ground while still studying. You will have an idea how the industry works and this experience will help you a lot once you finally apply for a journalism career.

It’s all in the preparation

Once you have all these, it will be easier for you to try your luck in applying in the nearest newspaper outfit or even in your dream daily broad sheet. Just like in applying for other jobs, many journalists today are required to bring in their resumes and samples of work. These are the basic things needed so the employer will have an idea if you are fit for the position.

So, it will be best if you start making your resume as early as now so you won’t be missing anything that is required of you. It is also best that as early as now, you should be choosing the sample of works that you may present to the editor or to the person in charge of hiring. It is best to choose your best works so you will have a chance in getting the job.

In choosing your sample works, consider those that are written very well and have reached a wide range of circulation. Although it is best that you choose these yourself, if you can, try to ask somebody to look at it. If they agree that one article is indeed the best one compared to the others, then you should take time to consider the suggestions.

Once you have all these you can start applying for a journalism career. It will be best to check if the newspaper outfits you are targeting have vacancies for the journalist or writer position. If you can apply online, try sending your resume as soon as possible.

But since your sample works would be a great reference, it would be best if you send everything—your resume and sample works—enclosed in an envelope via mail so the editors can see it right away.

People only know that there are editors and writers in newspapers but when you check at the workforce inside news organizations, there are different kinds of editors and writers as well as a host of other workers that team up to bring fresh news to your doorstep every morning. Here are some of the different careers in print journalism.

1. Editor in Chief
This is the top honcho when it comes to the editorial work. All of the stories that come out in the paper will pass by his desk and get approved. This is why when a newspaper is being sued for libel cases, the name of the editor in chief is always part of the defendants in the case. This is because in the ideal sense, all articles should have been read and approved by the editor in chief.

2. Managing Editor and Associate Editor
These are the assistants to the editor in chief. They are not the ones who bring them coffee and should not be confused with the job description of a secretary. Often, managing editors are the second in command, along with associate editors. They are basically tasked to handle the writers and the contributors for the section. In smaller news organizations like in schools, they are also the ones who manage the day to day operations like the schedule and the budget.

3. Section Heads
In a newspaper, there are different sections. One for instance deals with lifestyle and the other one with news or with sports. To make the job easier for the top officers, there are people who are tasked to handle each of the sections. They are called section heads. They are the ones in charge of assigning work and coming up with different stories. For those sections that have smaller sub sections in them, there are journalists who are tasked to head those chunks and they are called sub-section heads. They are tasked to take care of their own sections along with preparing the materials and closing the page.

4. Writers
These people are the lifeblood of the newspapers as they are the ones who gather and deliver the news to you. These are the people who go to where the action is and see what they can write about it. Often, writers are assigned to different beats. For instance, one may be assigned to report about health while another writes about sports.

5. Correspondents and contributors
These are people who also write for the paper but are not directly under the company’s employ. They can write and submit stories to different newspapers and they are paid per story and not per month like with the in house writers. Contributors are often what we call freelance writers. And because they are not employed by the company, they do not get the regular benefits but they don’t also have to report to work.

6. Editorial assistants
These people are the ones who take care of the day to day operation of one section. They also write when needed but their function is to help smoothen the operations for the writers and the editors.

7. Copyreaders
These are people who check on the article to see if there are typos and in some cases wrong grammar that were missed out during the editing stage. These people basically check the whole article and correct any errors in them. Often, what they do is surface checking and nothing deeper like rewriting the whole article.

A journalism career is perhaps the coolest job there is. You get to try out new things and go on exotic locations while still doing your job and yeah also get paid for it. This is especially true if you have already established your name either in the daily newspapers or in the television. You have access to the coolest events in the metro and even get trips and freebies.

But while this seems cool, it also involves a lot of hard work. It is not easy being a journalist. Besides getting the appropriate education for it, you also need to update your skills every now and then just to keep up with the changing face of media. And before you can actually become a news anchor or even an editor, you need to first climb the media ladder and work your ass off even on weekends.

All the sacrifice is however worth it. Those at the top of their journalism careers will surely have all the privileges plus the less amount of work. After all, news anchors just report the news from an idiot board. They do not go out and gather the news. Their underlings, the news reporters are the ones who do the back breaking work.

If that is the case, what if you are not willing to do the work? What if you want the good life without going through the hard life? Is there a way for you to make everything easier and jumpstart a journalism career?

There is none. If you want to make it, you have to be prepared to work hard but this does not mean that you cannot do some things that will make the hard work a little bit easier. Below are some things that you can do to get some shortcuts for your career.

1. Know the right people
Knowing the right people will help open doors of opportunities for you. Of course, you cannot just rely on your connections to make your career flourish. You also need the talent, the experience and the hard work. Connections are only there to help you get past the front door and get an interview. After that, you have to do your own thing and make sure that you impress the big bosses.

2. Develop yourself
Studying does not end the moment that you got your degree. Learning is a continuous process and if you want to get ahead of the game and gain an advantage over other journalists who are also looking to further their careers, you need to constantly develop yourself. Besides, media is forever changing and you need to be up to date if you want to be on top.

3. Promote yourself
Doing the hard work will come to nothing if nobody knows that you are doing it. You also need to at least promote yourself and make sure that your bosses know that you are doing such a great job. Finding the balance between letting them know what you have done without really appearing to be bragging is the key to getting that much needed promotion.

In closing, remember that it is important that you also work hard. No success comes so easily. But by doing the three things that we have enumerated, you will at least make your climb to the top of your journalism career a little easier.

For people who are looking forward to a journalism career, there are so many things that they can do to move an inch higher to their dream. For young people who were already to determine in themselves that a journalism career is really the profession that they would want to pursue, they can start gaining all they need to be qualified for the job.

Young ones should be arming themselves with the necessary skills in becoming a journalist such as writing. To do this, they should practice writing articles more often and monitor their improvement. To be more knowledgeable about the craft, they should also enroll in various writing workshops where the resource speakers are the ones who have been in the industry long enough to share their first-hand experiences. Aside from meeting famous writers and journalists, attending writing workshops can also help you improve your craft and will introduce you more into the technicalities of writing such as styles, structures and the like.

To widen your vocabulary, it is also a must that you read the newspaper regularly. Aside from current events and news, reading feature articles in magazines and even novels can help you be familiar with certain writing styles that can help you in creating your own in the future.

When you get to college, it is best to take up a journalism degree in a reputable school. Although this may seem minor, it would matter when credentials would be asked when you apply to a certain publication. Even if you think that you have the best writing skills in town, some employers are looking at track record to determine if you are really fit for the job.

While in journalism in school, you will be trained in all aspects of the field. Aside from training your writing skills, the school will open you up to other possibilities of the field such as the business side and other fields that may help you decide which field you are really suited to. Here, you will also have the opportunity to meet the “masters” in the field and you will also be able to use the school publication as the training ground for your future journalism career.

Getting the break

Some people are lucky enough to have a journalism career while still in school. These are rare cases and if you did not have that chance, you don’t have to feel bad about it. Probably, it is not yet your time. Instead of sulking into depression for not getting the position who have been aspiring for, it is best to create your own opportunity by learning how to market one’s self, coming up with a strong portfolio, and know when is the best time to break into the field.

1. Selling one’s self. This is a very important aspect because employers and editors would not believe you if you just say that you are good. During an interview for a position, try to mention some of your good qualities that can be assets to the company such as resourcefulness, creativity, and productivity.

2. Be willing to start small. If you are a fresh graduate, don’t expect that you will get the position you want right away. Since the journalism field is competitive, it is best if you will have mindset of starting small. Those who are enjoying their journalism career nowadays are the ones who underwent through the ladder of success.

Aside from entering a showbusiness career, many young people are dreaming of a journalism career because they think that this is one the easiest ways to be famous. While it’s true that a career in journalism would take one into greater heights in terms of popularity, it is not as easy as it seems.

So, to prepare yourself for tough road ahead, it is best if you start preparing and qualifying yourself for the position. Many experts in the field agree that journalism is a hard industry to break into. This is because aside from the credentials needed such as the degree and the skills that are required, people who are looking forward to a journalism career are expected to be creative, detail-oriented, and intuitive. Being in college is the best time to prepare for a journalism career, so it is best to:

- take a course related to journalism. Getting a degree in journalism is the best credential one could have if they are aiming for a journalism career. Although this is really not the only thing that matters, if one was able to finish a degree in journalism, it means that he or she might have the skills needed for the position. If it’s not possible for you to spend four years for a journalism degree, then you should consider taking up programs that can help you get started with it. Many schools offer classes for specific skills training such as writing and editing.

In fact, it is even easier and more convenient these days with the help of modern technology such as the Internet. Now, there are online classes that are related to fields of journalism such as news writing, feature writing, layout design, videography, photography, and even HTML because of the emerging market of new media. If you are able to educate yourself in different fields of media, you have greater chances of making that journalism career come true since you are now more knowledgeable and versatile.

- write for the newspaper inside the campus. Most of the best journalists out there have started their journalism career while still in college. This is because being a student can give them more freedom since they only have to think of what articles that would benefit their school community. If you are looking forward to a journalism career, writing for a college paper could serve as your best training ground.

Here, you will have your first taste of fame once you see your byline on the paper. You will also know how it feels like to get your work edited and will learn to be more versatile when writing. Being in the newspaper while in college will basically give you an idea how it is like to work for a real publication less the salary issues and other office political issues.

- try to get as many internships if you can. Internship is the next best thing to working for a certain publication. If you are able to secure an internship for several publications, you will have an idea how it is like in the real pressroom. Internships aim to give students a first taste of how it is like to work on the real thing.

So, if you can, while still in college, you should get as many internships as possible so you will have these experience to back you up once you start with your own journalism career.

A career in journalism may seem simple. After all, you just need to write and read from an idiot board. But appearances can be deceiving. Being a journalist is tough job and you need the right training and skills to be able to succeed in it. Here are those things:

1. Talent
In most things, you need the talent to be able to get ahead from the rest of the pack. Journalism involves writing, interviewing and going in front of the camera. If you do not have any of these skills, then it’s time to forget about a career and journalism and pursue something that you are good at. You should be able to find something that you enjoy doing as well as something that you are good at too.

2. Training
Even with such enormous talent, you cannot climb up to the top without the proper training. You need to constantly update your skills and your mind. The industry and the world in general is constantly changing and modernizing. This is especially true with the media who are always at the forefront of new trends and products.

You can get training by joining conferences for journalists or sharpening your skills with seminars and training sessions that will help you get familiar with the new trends in the journalism world.

3. Education
Although not all top journalists are graduates of journalism courses, most of them had and almost all of them have had a great college education. You cannot go by wits alone and by sheer talent. You also need people who will teach you things and provide the things that you need to know to start your journey. Besides if you are looking to grab hold of a job in one of the biggest networks and news organizations, you need to have at least a college degree just to be considered.

4. Mentor
A person who you can go for advice and counsel is perhaps one of the secret weapons of most successful people. Being a novice in the field, people cannot expect you to make the right decisions early on. Thus, you need people who are already in the field to help you with your career. Mentors also help open doors for you because they already know so many people within the industry.

5. Experience
Even if you are just in school, you can already gain some experience in the world of journalism. You can do this by joining organizations in school that will help you develop your talent in writing, speaking and interviewing. If you want to have a career in print journalism, then go right ahead and apply for a staff position in the college newspaper or journal. You can also join the literature club as well as other organizations that need writers. You can also submit to publications even when you are still studying. The articles that will be published will be added to your portfolio.

If you dream of having a journalism career in broadcast, then the speech club and the debate team is for you. It will help you polish your language and make you think on your feet, which is a must in hosting jobs. You can also directly apply for internships, which are given to students. With this, you can already experience the job first hand while still studying.

These days, many people would want to get a journalism career because they feel that it is the easiest way to earn money. Some even think that this could be their gate to fame while others believe that nothing could be easier than this. No matter what your reason is, it would still be best to consider carefully your options so you won’t regret it in the end.

Paving the way

As an industry, journalism itself can be tough on those aspiring ones. Why? because this is a demanding job that only the “tough” ones are able to handle. Experts say that aspirants who are not tough enough to meet the demands of this strict industry should be thinking twice to even consider it. This is because the industry doesn’t only require one to have the superior skills in writing but would also require one to meet certain challenges for a paltry pay.

If you still want to have a journalism career despite all its pitfalls, here are some of the things that you need to do to open up the doors for the industry:

1. Find a good school and get a journalism degree. These days, students who were able to finish a journalism degree in reputable schools have greater advantages of getting a journalism career compared to those who did not. This is because the training that one gets in a journalism school may be enough to be qualified for the job and if he or she was able to finish a degree, chances are, he or she will be the topmost considerations when an employer accepts for the job. If you really want to land on a journalism job, it is best if you finish a journalism degree in school because here, you will learn not only the basic such as writing and editing but other aspects of media as well such as layout design, photography, and even desktop publishing.

2. Take an active role in the school paper. While in college, it is best to find a training ground for your future career. In journalism, the best training ground would be the school paper because here, you will be allowed to write for publication. You will also have the chance to experience all the things that happen in the real world or journalism such as beating deadlines and your work getting edited by the editor. If you can’t write for the college paper, find other venues where you can get your articles published such as the community paper, the college magazine, the school’s literary folio, the yearbook, and even an online publication where other students can access it and read your works.

3. Establish a good relationship with your journalism professors and even internship superiors. If you have a network in the journalism industry, it will be easier for you to launch a journalism career in the future. If you were able to establish a good-natured relationship with your professors who are media practitioners, they can help you land on a job in their current publication once you graduate. If not, they can recommend you to other editors they know and if you pass all the tests and the requirements, you might even get the job in the publication.

Your internship supervisors can also do the same job as your professors. All you need to do is to keep in touch and keep them updated about your life.

Knowing how to write is the most basic skill that one needs to launch a journalism career. However, not all writers—no matter how good they might be—are given the chance or the break that they need.

Some good writers opt to wait for that big break for a journalism career. Although this is the ideal thing to do, this is not the most practical option especially if one needs to earn for a living. So, what does the best option aspiring journalist have but to engage in freelance writing?

Where freelance writing could lead you

Freelance writing means that one is writing article for different publications. Usually, the editors of the publication give freelance writers assignments or topics to write about and are being paid per article submitted. While other freelance writers just write articles about random topics and find the suitable publication for their works all by themselves.

Experts say launching a journalism career can be difficult especially to newly graduates but they should not lose hope in getting their big break. Instead of waiting for that big break to come, what they can do is to create their own “break” by getting into freelance writing. The following are some of advantages of freelance writing and tips that can help aspiring journalists to get their dream job:

1. Freelance writing can help you create a network of people from the journalism industry. Submitting articles for various publications such as newspapers, magazines, and even online sites can help you meet people who are already in the journalism industry for a long time now. If you are able to keep in touch with them and establish a good working relationship with them, then there’s a greater chance for them to recommend you once a position in their media outfit has been vacated.

2. Join a network of fellow writers. Since you are working all alone, freelancing can be a depressing work at times. So, to keep you from getting bored and distracted, you can join network of other writers who you can keep in touch with. By joining networks or groups such as these, you are also opening yourself up to the possibility of meeting people who can help you launch your own journalism career.

3. Always be professional. Although you are not working for a certain media outfit full time, it is best to always maintain professionalism when conducting business. No matter what the size of the publication you are working for in any specific assignment, it is your responsibility to always meet the deadline so no person or business would suffer from your neglect. Always submit neat copies of the manuscripts or articles. If they have more demands, try to accommodate them for as long as you don’t suffer much.

4. Ensure that the communication lines are always open. Freelance writers are hired to ensure that the editor’s job would be easier. If you want to land on a journalism career by using freelance writing as a first step, always make sure that you keep your lines open so if there’s a query or clarification in the article that you have submitted, it will be easier to contact you.

If you make it a habit to keep your communications line open, editors will be easier to get in touch with you once there is an opening for a journalist or writer position in their publication.

If you are eyeing for a journalism career just because of fame or money, you should know first if this is really the profession that would suit you. You can do this by conducting a simple research on how it is like to be a journalist. Try surfing the Internet for articles that are written by journalists themselves and find out their personal accounts on the profession.

These are the best articles that you should read when considering a journalism career because you will have an idea how it is like when they were starting. You will also get some tips from them in terms of applying or even writing for a certain publication. Aside from that, you can also get realizations from their personal experiences.

Real journalism world

Although a journalism career opens a lot of doors and opportunities like getting into different places and meeting people from all walks of life, some people—especially those who are not really cut out for it—might find these realizations a turn off:

1. There’s really no money. If you want to get rich, then a journalism career should be the least option that you should have in mind. Why? because writing as a profession does not really pay that much ever since. Imagine this, you will be writing several articles in one day only to find out that you have spent more time and money that what the company pays you for. Although some big newspaper companies give other journalists better pay, it is not always the case in medium-sized publications. So, if you are looking forward to great pay when you enter a journalism career, dream on.

2. Less room for promotion. Once you enter a journalism career, it is best to give up your hopes for any promotion. This is because unlike in other industries where there are so many stages and levels to get to the top, there is really no room for promotion in a journalism career. Here, you only have two options—being a journalist or a reporter on the field and being an editor who stays in the office and sits on a desk editing works and articles. Since writing does not have age limit, the only room for promotion that one has is if the editor left the position and transferred to another company or section or if the editor dies of old age!

3. Your life could be in danger. Journalists—especially the hard-hitting ones or those in the field at all times—have their lives at risk because of their job. If you feel that you are not the type of person who would be willing to sacrifice his or her life for the sake of truth and to bring people the news no matter what would it cost you, it’s time to cross out a journalism career from your options as early as now.

4. Prone to humiliation from editors. If you are not the type of person who have high tolerance for criticism in your works, then stop dreaming for a career in journalism. Why? because many editors could be hard on new writers because they feel that they have so much to learn. Many editors are hard on writers especially on their works because they feel that this is the best way to motivate them. For many, this strictness works but not on all cases especially if the person is not tough enough for a serious job.

A career in journalism is one that many dreams of. You only need to turn on the television and watch as hosts get access to the some of the most exclusive award shows and parties, interview celebrities and try out new things to start dreaming. But the field is not as idyllic as it seems. In fact, it can be a lot tougher than what you think.

Unknown to many, a career in journalism involves a lot of hard work and dedication. you don’t just go in front of the camera, smile and talk your head off. What you say has a lot of impact. It can shape opinions and perception. Thus, you need to be able to report something that is relevant, true and interesting for the audience. The same goes with the articles that writers publish on newspapers. Here are some of the things that are deemed important if you want to start a career in journalism.

1. Great writing

Writing and reporting is also not as easy as taking a pen and putting it to work. The article or the report must have facts that are verified. It must contain quotes from experts that will make the article or the report credible. It must be well-written and grammatically correct. But more than that, it should be able to attract the readers and make them interested to read the stuff that are written from beginning to end. In other words, articles and reports must be interesting enough to lull the readers and the audience to stay.

2. Style and Presence

There is also such a thing as style when it comes to reporting and writing. Look at newspaper articles and news magazine shows. There are people that you recognize for some kind of style. Some can be loud while others can be melodramatic. If you want to really become famous and carve your name in the industry, you need to have some kind of style that will set you apart from the rest. This style will allow others to recognize your work even when your name is not yet there.

3. Updated

If you really want to stay in the game and even get to the top of the heap, you need to not only do a good job but to constantly update yourself with the latest in the field and in the world in general. Journalists are what we call opinion makers. People look to the newspapers for their news and for things that are new and hip. Thus, journalists must be able to keep up with the new things in life, the latest trends, the new fad. Besides, the world is constantly changing and you need to be able to keep up with it.

4. Integrity
Being society’s fourth estate, people with a journalism career has a lot of power in their hands. They after all are the ones who decide on what is new and fashionable. What they say and what they write can convince people and make them change how they look at things. Thus, it is important for people in the industry to have the right set of morals. That way, we can be sure that those who are shaping our opinions for us are trustworthy.

So you want to become a journalist. You want to either write for newspapers or cover events live and have your report broadcasted all across America. Although these industries are basically in the same realm, they are very different from each other. In fact, people who want to get into the each of the industry will need to develop a different set of skills in order to make it. Here are some of the steps that you need to take in order to get a career in journalism.

1. Get an education
Nothing can train you better than going to a university and getting a degree in journalism and in media. Depending on what kind of media you want to get into, you can take up journalism in the classic sense meaning print journalism or of course broadcast journalism. There are also courses that are solely focused on what is called online journalism which is slowly emerging as a big one in the industry.

While you are in the university, you cannot just rely on what you are being taught inside the classroom. If you really want to have the proper training and know the ins and outs of the field, you also have to try your hand and join organizations in your school that are into writing, speech and of course journalism. You can for instance become a staff member of the school newspaper or maybe sign up for the speech club or the debate club.

2. Develop your skills
If you want to have a career in print, then write your heart out every day. Practice truly makes perfect and the more you try, the more you will be used to doing it. There are a lot of ways right now to publish your writing and have people respond to it. Keep a blog and try to update it everyday even if they contain something as silly as your adventures in school. This way, you will be able to know how people respond to your writing. Also, by writing all the time, you will be able to develop your own style.

3. Update yourself
The world is constantly changing and the field of journalism is not exempted from it. Thus, you need to also constantly update yourself with the new things and new trends in the field. The same also goes with your skill level as well as your education. You can do this by attending seminars and conferences. Besides, you need to make sure that you are aware of the latest. After all, people expect the journalists to first know what is happening.

4. Sign up for internship
The best way to really gain some experience, the real kind of work experience is to get an internship in newspapers and in broadcast companies. Here, you will be exposed to what is really happening behind the scenes. This is where you will really experience the real working environment and hopefully learn a lot from it should you get into the industry in the future. Getting an internship can also give you an opportunity to be hired by that company should you give a stellar performance.

It will also be a welcome addition to your resume when you apply to work. It will set you apart from all the newly grads who don’t have much experience in the real world of a journalism career.

Everybody wants to be a journalist. The job can be exciting and in some way glamorous. Depending on where you are assigned, you are given the chance to try out new things and meet different people. Some are given assignments to cover fashion while the others are into health and some about news about the world. But whichever kind of news you are tasked to report about, a career in journalism is never boring.

But though everybody wants to become a journalist, not all can be one. There are people who are cut out to be writers and broadcasters. Here are some of the qualities that you need to possess if you want to be one:

1. A nose for the news
Writers and journalists are curious people. They love to investigate and ask questions. They are the kind of people who would go to a scene of an accident and just ask people what happened. These are not the ones who will just sit by their cars and wait for the traffic to clear up. They will get out and find out what is happening to the world. This is why journalists and writers have a nose for the news. They look at things and see something new from it.

2. Word-y people
Whether they are on print or in broadcast, these people are in love with words. They love to talk, to interview people around them and compose reports and essays. Even those in broadcast news are also basically writing. Some even have outlines before they go live. These people’s world revolves around words.

3. Presence
To become successful in the business, you need to have a presence. In writing, you need to be able to establish your own style and a specialization. Not only should you have a perfect grammar but you should also have a style that calls out to people or makes them interested. There is a certain presence that can be found in an article or in certain style of writing. The same goes with broadcasters. Often, those who are generally attractive and have an overall pleasant appearance are hired as broadcasters. They have a great presence on television.

4. Skill
You don’t just write anything you want or say anything you want if you are a journalist. True blue journalists are respected. Their every word are followed on by people and everything they say is like bible. In fact, journalists are often said to be the opinion-makers of the world. They decide what is hip and what is not. They give you advice and say what you should do and should not do. With this, you need to have the skill to do this. Skill comes in the way you fashion your words to make a story and in how you gather the facts and make a story that is relevant to the times and interesting to all people.

5. Integrity
This is perhaps one of the most important qualities that people in the journalism career needs to have. Because these people are basically the opinion-makers of the world, they have enormous power and hold over other industries and business. Some can use this power that they have inappropriately and even illegally. For people to really trust what you say, you need to first become trustworthy.

More and more people are getting into journalism career because they feel that this is one profession that would give them freedom in terms of work schedule, office attires, and even in speaking their minds.

If you are one of those people who are looking forward into a journalism career, it is best if—as early as—now, you would start qualifying yourself for the position. The best thing that you need to do is really know if the journalism career is really what you want to do. It is best to understand the industry very well first before you finally decide on it.

You can do this by conducting a simple research on how it is like to have a journalism career. You can find many articles—some of these are even written by prominent figures in the newspaper industry—and ask yourself if you are willing to take this path. Once you have decided, you now have to earn the credentials needed for it or that can help you to achieve that goal of having a journalism career.

To earn the right credentials that can help you a take a notch higher in realizing your dream, it is ideal to enroll to a journalism school. This is because enrolling in a course that is directly related to it can help you understand the industry better and would also help you to be properly equipped for it.

What to consider

Today, there hundreds of journalism colleges and universities that offer various programs that are related to a journalism career. For you not to waste time studying in a school that won’t really help you once you have finished, it is best to be meticulous in choosing the right school before you finally enter it.

1. Choose the one that will fit your needs and personal preference. This is very important in choosing a journalism school because it will help you realize what it is that you are about to enter. You need to know what are your needs in terms of skills training and find out if the school can cater that need. You should also take time to consider if you really like the school and its programs not only because of the name or the popularity but the structure of the programs offered as well.

2. Choose a school that would allow you to pick your own professors. In regular schools or courses, the school usually decides who is the professor who will teach you. But since a journalism course is all about hands-on experience, it is best to choose a school that would give you freedom to choose who will be the ones who will be teaching you. This is very important because you will be able to get the first hand accounts from them.

If you don’t have an idea who are the professors to choose, you can do a research on the faculty of the school. Look for the ones who you think are the best reference persons to you. Many of the faculty in journalism schools nowadays are into academics and they are not even media practitioners. Although they can be beneficial in honing your skills and knowledge, it will be better if you choose those professors that have experience in working as a journalist so he or she can help you start with your own journalism career.

A journalism career is one of the things that people who are inclined into writing are dreaming of. This is because the career in this industry can give one instant access to almost all fields in the society. It can also give a person instant access to fame as well as the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life.

Being a journalist would also enable one to get perks such as free travels and so much more. But, having a journalism career is not all about these. It entails so much more to be able to get that dreamy state of the profession.

If you are one of those who are eyeing for a journalism career, there are two major considerations that you should think of very carefully—money and time.

All about the money

Before one breaks into a journalism career, there are so many things needed to him or her to be qualified for the job. First and foremost would be the credentials that you need. Although some might say that getting a degree from a reputable journalism school is not really necessary, this could be an advantage especially now that all industries are setting higher standards and have grown more competitive. So, if you want to ensure that there will be greater chances for you to land on a job in this industry, you must be well equipped.

If you will take a degree in journalism from a reputable school, it would cost you about $15,000 to $30,000 in tuition and expenses every year for four years. Not to mention your miscellaneous expenses such as your allowance for basic necessities such as food, clothing, and board and lodging.

Once you have graduated, there is no assurance that you will get exactly the position you wanted. Experts in the industry don’t actually recommend this profession to those who are looking forward to big paychecks because there’s really not much of money here. In fact, journalists are known to have low salary brackets since. So, if you would want to jump to a journalism career just for the money, try to consider other options, because more often than not, you will get disappointed.

What about the time?

Aside from money, one of the things that people who are into journalism careers lack is the time. This is because the very nature of the job is very hectic and erratic. So, chances are you will just be working more than you should. And since the industry is all about urgency—because of news and scoop articles—it will be eating too much of your time. Sometimes, instead of spending this time for yourself and for your family, the tendency of the job is to take your time without really quantifying it with money.

Although this is the case, a journalism career can give you more time to be free and express yourself. It will also give you enough time to come up with articles that would help influence the way people in various communities think. Being a journalist also gives you enough time to be a catalyst of change in the society by calling the attention of people in authorities and giving the public what they need to know.

But, despite the prices to pay for a journalism career, many people are still looking forward to this because they feel that they, somehow, they can change the world, one article at a time.

Many people who are looking forward to a journalism career are getting disheartened easily because the editors from various publications, themselves, say that this is one industry that is hard to break into. Although there is truth to this because of the fact that one needs specific skills—such as superior writing skills and people skills—this doesn’t mean that the doors are firmly shut to those who want to be a part of the industry.

If you want to try getting into the industry of journalism, the following are some of the tips that can help you start right

1. Get the credentials that you need. Many people say that if you want a journalism career, it is not really necessary to take a degree and study is a journalism school. Although this might be true to older writers and to some privileged or lucky young ones, this won’t happen to ordinary ones. So, if you really want to ensure that you will land on a career in this field, it is best to be educated about it. Getting a degree and studying is a reputable journalism school would definitely give you all the academic credentials that you need.

Aside from that, being in school will also give you the opportunity to learn from the best minds in the industry. You will also get the chance to practice your skills when you get involved with the campus paper that might publish your work. When you major in journalism, you will be doing internships in various publications, which can open, up your world to various options and possibilities. Who knows? If your internship went well, the publication might offer to absorb you right away after finishing college.

2. Get experience. More often that not, the college paper is the major training ground for future journalists. But since there are many students and only a few slots available for the staffers, it might not be possible for you to get a slot. If you weren’t able to make it in the student paper, it is best to get experience from other publications such as the community paper or even on online sites.

3. Learn the ropes. The sooner that you learn the ropes in the field, it will be easier for you to start a journalism career. Learning the ropes mean that you should know all the technicalities of the field and what are the things that you and should not do. If you really are determined in pursue a career in this field, you should know what publication to apply to, the ideal starting position, what to do bring such as your credentials and sample works and what to do during the initial interview. It is also best to ask about the salary for starters so you would have an idea how much you should ask for.

4. Consider other options. One of the reasons why many give their dreams up in having a journalism career is because they did not get the position they wanted to right away. Fresh graduates should not expect to have the “reporter” or “journalist” position once they are hired in a newspaper or in any other publication since there are still many who are experienced enough for the position.

If there are no vacancies for the position that you are eyeing for, consider other options that are close to it such as becoming a copy aide, a proofreader or a copywriter.

Hundreds of people are dreaming to have a journalism career but not every one of them is given the opportunity to realize that dream. This is because not all of them are determined enough to go after that dream while others can no longer wait for that “big break” to come.

If you are one of those who don’t want to let that dream go, there are so many ways that you can do to achieve it. The first thing that you can do is to get yourself closer to that dream. How? You can do this by preparing yourself and equipping yourself for the job.

Preparation can start as early as your younger years. If you feel that you really want to take this path, you should start enhancing your skills as early as possible. You can start enhancing your writing skills by coming up with a journal where you can express all your thoughts. Every now and then, review what you have written to check the grammar, the structure, the coherence, and the style. Once you are able to take notice of these factors, you can try writing with a certain style on the next journal.

You can also join writing workshops that are being held during summer or semestral breaks. During this time, you can meet other people who are also interested in a future journalism career and you can exchange views with them. You may also meet your mentor here that can guide you in your writing or journalism career in the future.

Aside from writing, you can also enhance your journalism skills by widening your vocabulary. Reading a wide variety of reading materials such as books and magazines can do this. If you engage yourself in reading, you can get some tips and style from the writers themselves. You can try these styles and find out which one would best suit you.

When you get to college, you may also want to find a good school that offers a journalism degree. Although some say that finishing a journalism degree is not really “all that” for a journalism career, it will pay to finish it because this will be among your major credentials. Aside from giving a degree, enrolling in a journalism school will also help you to be trained for the serious tasks ahead. Here, you will have the opportunity to meet great journalists and learn from them and you will also have the training ground where you can get your works published—the school paper.

After graduation, you might be absorbed by the media outfit where you did your internship. But, if this doesn’t happen, you can always apply in other companies. Landing on a journalism career would not be that easy but don’t be disheartened. Instead of waiting for that break to come, try to create you own opportunities. You can do this by starting off as a freelance writer or contributor. Here, you can meet people in the industry who can hook you up in certain positions that are vacated by previous writers.

You can also start small such as a copy aide, the entry-level newsroom assistants, and work your way up. During this stage, what you can do is relish the experience and learn everything that you can learn. And by that time that a journalism career would land on your lap, you will be more than ready and qualified for the job.

Once you have finally decided that a journalism career is the career path the you would want to take, then you should start preparing your credentials and sample works as early as now. This is very important because your credentials will serve as your greatest “backer” in applying for any position in the field of journalism.

By this time, you should also be applying for various media outfits and hope that some of then would respond soon. And when that time comes, there will be nothing left for you but to prepare for the interview.

Paying attention to the interview part

To most employers, the interview part is very important because this will help them determine if the person they are about to accept is not only qualified for the job but can also follow the company’s regulations as well. Here are some tips that can help aspirants to achieve that most-coveted journalism career:

1. Try to find a way to sell yourself to the interviewer. Usually, editors are the hardest people to sell yourself to during the interview because they feel that your article would say everything about you. But since it is necessary, they don’t have a choice but to conduct it to applicants themselves. If you are scheduled to be interviewed by the editor, make sure that you don’t waste his or her time by being straight to the point. You can discreetly sell your good points without being too obnoxious. You can mention a few of your good qualities such as your diligence or even resourcefulness in making articles and mention examples right away.

2. Take time to research about the company. If you have knowledge about the company prior to the interview, then you will have an idea how things work there. Before the scheduled interview, you can get copies of the articles that were published and review them. By doing this, you will be familiar with its readers and the type of articles and stories that are being published.

3. Show your interest in the company. You can do this by asking if there are training for new reporters and how is the advancement works. If you inquire about these, the interviewee will think that you are interested to learn and you have intentions of staying in the company for a long time.

4. Prepare explanations for your sample works. More often than not, interviewees ask about the sample works of the applicants. Although it is not a common practice to ask for an explanation about those sample pieces, there are those who do that to test how prepared the applicant is for the journalism career ahead of him or her. For you not to miss this chance, make sure that you choose the best sample works you have and prepare an explanation for these days before the interview take place.

5. Keep your humor. If the interviewer has a good sense of humor, try to ride with it and be a good sport. Most of the interviewers tend to be difficult to push the applicants to the wall. They feel that this is the best training one could get if he or she is looking forward to a journalism career. If you encounter these types of interviewer, always keep your emotions low and think that there’s really nothing personal about it.
to prepare for the interview.

A career in journalism seems exciting and glamorous. And in a way, it is. Your job will definitely not boring because you get to experience new things and meet different people. Some will even have the chance to visit foreign lands and try out different foods even while doing your job and getting paid for it. Some lucky ones will even have access to the most exclusive parties and hobnob with celebrities. They are treated like royalty and given freebies and gifts for their effort.

But the same way that it is exciting and glamorous, it is also a harrowing and taxing job. Although they are seen to be partying and talking with people, they are actually setting the foundation for their work, which is a broadcast news or a write-up on a newspaper. Even while talking to people, they are already subtly asking questions and forming conclusions in their head. It may seem like subterfuge but hey, that’s just how the industry works.

Thus, they may appear like they are enjoying themselves but in truth, their mind and their heart is not really in the partying mood. They are instead working to get a story and get the facts for that story. And that can involve a lot of work. It’s not something as simple as asking questions. Journalists need to verify what they have heard and get a reliable source that they can quote. It would be good if they can get an interview with the person involved in the issue but most of the time, this is not possible so they need to find someone close to that person and get a statement from them. Finding a really reliable source is important if you want to create a credible name in the industry and also to avoid lawsuits and libel cases.

Yes, journalists can be sued for what they have written. This is because what they write shape the public’s thought, opinion and perception of things and people. If what they say is not true, it can harm the image of a person, a business or any entity. Thus, it is important they be careful with what they say and write.

Writing is not at all easy either. You don’t just write what you want and let the readers fill in the blanks. You need to be able to give them a complete set of information without really making it appear that you are. That is the beauty of journalism, giving them what you think without directly telling them or boring them with all the details.

As much as possible, a journalist must be able to say what they mean in the shortest possible way that is interesting and comprehensible. This is especially true with broadcast news who needs to keep it short. The minutes is after all precious in airtime

A career in journalism may seem easy and ideal but like everything else in this world, it is not. When you really look at it closely, you will realize that it is as much work as being a secretary or being an office assistant. The only difference is, you get to experience different things while doing your job. And maybe this is where the difference and the advantage of this industry lies.

Still, to become a journalist, you need to be focused, skillful, passionate and generally good at your job like with every other jobs there are.

If you are one of those who are eyeing for a journalism career but don’t know where and how to start, then now is the best time to reflect on your options and what you really want. Knowing how much do you really want a journalism career would help you realize all the things that you need to do and endure just for you to land on a certain job.

Journalism career would require the aspirant to be qualified for the job. In terms of qualification, the first thing that editors look for is the skills of the applicant in terms of writing for the newspaper industry and for the broadcast industry, the voice and the good register of the applicant’s face while on camera. For some editors, if the applicant has superiors writing skills or good projection skills, he or she is qualified for the job since this is the very basic thing that person would be doing.

Second consideration would be the credentials of the applicant. Credentials include a journalism degree from a reputable school or in the case of those who have previous journalism experience, the length of years they have been in the industry. This is of utmost consideration to some employers because this will help them gauge the skills of the applicant as well as his or her capability.

Broadcast journalism

Many people are dreaming of a journalism career in broadcasting because they will have instant access to fame. Why? imagine how popular can you get if people will be seeing your face everyday when reporting for news or specific story.

Although broadcast journalism has its perks, it also requires a lot of effort to be able to stay long in the business. To ensure that you will be doing the right thing once you are given the break in a journalism career for broadcasting, consider the following tips when on air:

1. Try to find a way to talk to people not in-groups but as separate individuals. Knowing that people would be seeing them simultaneously, broadcast journalists tend to speak to their audience in-groups. When this happens, there is a tendency to be monotone and boring. The best tip when on air is to speak to an audience like how you do it with your family members or friends.

2. Try to see your audience face in the eyes of your mind. Since you are pretending to talk to a huge number of people that are not really there, the best thing that you can do is keep an image of one person on your mind. Speak to that person according to his or her expected reaction because chances are this would be the same reaction that you will be getting from the majority of your audience.

3. Maintain eye contact. This can be hard to do in broadcast journalism but people who are aspiring for a journalism career in this field should master this. Occasional eye contact if very important because this will make your audience feel that you are talking not on a random number of people but to him or her directly. When airing, practice eye contact to the persons in that room which can either be the cameraman, the director, or even the sound engineer.

This is important so you won’t lose focus knowing that there’s really nobody there that you are talking to.

Before, many people enter journalism career without having to finish a degree on it. But now, industries are tougher that is why credentials when applying for a journalism career are somehow of utmost importance.

Many would say that if one has the innate skills in writing, there is no more need to finish a degree in journalism. This might be true before but now that the times have changed, getting a degree in journalism can be the best advantage one could have compared to the rest.

Finishing a degree in journalism does not only gives one the best credential to back him or her when applying for a position in a newspaper or certain publication but it can also help the person a lot in terms of growing and in enhancing his or her skills.

How? When one enrolls to a journalism school, all the subjects that would be taught would be about the industry and the writing as a craft itself. Here, specialized classes would be given to various journalism fields such as news writing, features writing, and editing. Other media related subjects would also be explored such as new media publishing, photography, and newspaper management.

If one is enrolled in a degree for journalism, he or she will be the most updated in terms of the newspaper industry because more often than not, the students are asked by their teachers or professors to monitor the trend of the industry. Here are other advantages why getting a degree in journalism is important these days for aspiring journalists:

- It gives you first-hand experience. If you are enrolled in a journalism degree, there is no excuse for you not to learn all about the industry because these are very topics that will be discussed inside the school. Being enrolled in a journalism degree is the closest experience that you can get if you are aspiring to work in the industry.

It is best that you have a good experience while in school because this will help you decide if you really want to pursue the job after. While in journalism school, you will have the chance to learn from good instruction from professors. You will also experience the beauty of computer-assisted reporting and you can also get a glimpse of how different journalism practices are in different parts of the world.

- It gives you the opportunity to meet and learn from the best journalists. This is one advantage that you will only get once you enroll to a journalism career. Since the best journalists are usually hired to share their experiences to younger students, you will have the chance to meet the journalist or writer that you look up to. During his or her class, you will have the chance to ask questions and can even ask that professor some advice on how you can have a successful journalism career. And if you are able to establish a good relationship from these media practitioners or experts, they can even help you to connect with other people in the journalism industry in the future.

- It will open you up to greater chances of being a journalist. Most journalism schools play a very big role in ensuring that their students would land a journalism career in the future. They do this by creating a network of people that can help their students in internships as well as keeping partnerships with various media establishments where they can hook their students up if there’s a vacancy.

Journalism is perhaps one career that pays lucratively right now, that is if you are one of those popular news anchors who define what we need to hear and know every morning or evening. The same also goes with editors of magazines and daily newspapers who help shape the opinions and needs of people. This is how powerful journalists can be. Well, those at the top of the food chain are.

Journalists who are however still starting out cannot look forward to the same paycheck. In fact, some journalists even take on extra odd jobs just to be able to make both ends meet. This career is actually a lot like being a movie star in terms of the pay. Salary gets higher as you climb the career ladder and ironically, when you are on the top you don’t even need the cash because everything will virtually be given free to you- freebies, foreign trips, events.

But you don’t get that high salary cap in just a flick of the hands. Journalism is hard work and you need to realize that before you really decide to get into it. Behind the glamour is work that needs dedication and commitment. And you need to get that in your head. Otherwise, you will only make it harder for yourself because of really high expectations which will only end up disappointing you. This is perhaps the first thing that you really need to do before you embark in a journalism career.

The second thing that you have to do is to examine your talents and then your skills to see if they suit the profession. A journalism career will involve a talent in writing and in interviewing, if you are getting into the daily newspapers and in hosting and broadcasting if you are aiming for television. When you go further in your career, you also need to develop the aesthetics for layout and formatting of shows for broadcast. You will need that as you climb the media ladder.

If you have the skills then the next stop is to gain the experience and the education for the job. You can do this by checking schools for degree programs and trainings on writing and interviewing. Colleges also offer courses on media and journalism. As for the experience, there are media companies that are offering internships and on job training for young professionals and students. Of course, getting into one will need some work but if you have the education and the skill, you can certainly get into the program.

When you have done all these things, then you can apply for a real job in media companies. Newbies often start as editorial assistants or news reporters. This becomes their stepping stone to a bigger and better position in the news organization or media outfit.

Getting a proper job will ensure that you will have better training. Having one will also give you the responsibilities and will expose you to the real world of journalism. That way, you can learn first hand what goes on behind the scenes.

What is great about a career in journalism is the fact that you can enjoy while working. Thus, work will not feel like work. You may not notice it but time will fly and you will find yourself eventually in a higher position.
